Wal-Mart -> Good idea

A few thoughts before I head off to church....

I'm very happy to see that Wal-Mart has decided to renew a blighted area of the city and build a new Supercenter at Parkdale Plaza.  I've always had a soft-spot for the retail giant, I wore the big smiley face vest for almost five years.  It helped me pay my bills through college. (probably a few beers too)

With that said here's what I'd hope Wal-Mart will do with their new building...

Roger Houston...we now have Flash!

It's took a new computer, lots of wiring and a few minor cuts, but our engineering staff and myself brought our new video encoder for KRISTV.COM online.  What's so cool about that - it does Flash!  It's an announcement that will make many of our Firefox, Mozilla and Mac friends very happy.

We're going to spend the next few weeks building up our video library of Flash encoded files, and are planning to roll out our Flash player when we launch our new homepage design.  (Hopefully that will be within the next month.)

But to start, we're running a "beta" flash player on our weather page.  We can also embed it just about anywhere, so here's the first big test.

It appears it work inside our little bloggersphere.  That's so cool.  I've been like a little kid at Christmas opening all the new computer boxes...  Of course, I had to wait till all the wiring was done to "play" with them.  Along with the computer, we got a sweet UPS backup to keep the computers humming in a power surge, storm or hurricane.

Stay tuned, I'll have more news on the new homepage look in the coming weeks.

New Blog ... New software

I know it's been awhile, but I've had good reason for not blogging.  Here's why.  I've actually written several posts over the past few weeks, but the blogging software I was using sucked.  It didn't like the links I wanted to add - or some other error occoured when trying to save a post.   When I tried to go back - the post was gone.

So we're migrating to TypePad for our blogging platform.  Our parent newspaper in Charleston, SC uses it ... and so far they like it.

We can produce multiple blogs on this format, so if you're interested in blogging, we can set you up.  If you have any questions ... send me an e-mail.

Busy Busy Bee ... lets catch up!

Holy smokes it's been a busy week!  It's been meeting central this week ... lots of out-of-town visitors. Glad they came, but man am I behind on stuff.  Of course, I have to go to our corporate office next week, and Vanessa our news producer is out-of-town this weekend. So there's no rest for the weary this next week.

Anyway...let us catch up.  The biggest news in the local Internet world was the launch of a new Web site last week.  I'm man enough to not only say who it is, I'll even link to it: www.kiiitv.com.  I'm very happy that the folks over on SPID have launched a "real" Web site.

It really only means one thing for us.  It's a challenge for us over here at KRISTV.COM to work harder.  Over the past two years, we've done a lot to build your trust by doing our best every day.  We appreciate the fact that you're surfing over to us.

Our new photo gallery is almost done!  There's going to be a lot of talk about We Spotted and You Spotted in the next few weeks.  I'm really excited about this new product, and I know you will too.

Our homepage redesign continues to take shape ... and lots more to come.  I'd write more, but I have so much work to finish today.

Blog 2.0

OK ... this is really just Blog 0.2

Now that we're launching a new blog directory, I'm going to take another stab at posting a blog.  My first one wasn't as successful as I would have liked, but as you can imagine, I spend way too much time in front of my computer.  Hopefully I will do a better job posting on this one.   One thing I will try to put in my blog is a little fun from You Tube every now and again...

I can really relate with this recent bit on the Colbert Report.

Video no longer works ... Viacom ordered YouTube to remove their clips... Not too bright!

My father has worked with Sprint for years...  Here's what I can remember of the name changes it's gone through since he started:

  • United Telephone of Ohio
  • United Telephone North Central
  • Sprint North Central
  • Sprint
  • Sprint Local
  • Embarq

Give if a few years ... it will be Sprint again.
